My Memories of Bristol ZOO Gardens

I long time ago didn't write a blog , and it has got 2 reasons:

  1. I didn't want to write blog until I don't finish with the basics of the website ( It not too much left ) ,

  2. I didn't finish the basics yet, because I am lazy.

I work Monday to Friday, I do physical work ( It isn't too hard, but... ) .

When the weekend comes, I do the weekly shopping, washing, cooking, but after sometimes more comfortable for me to take a walk, (when the weather is good), reading a book or watching some series or movies, than sit to the laptop and work in the website.

I have another project (or hobby) too, and sometimes I prefer that to do, because that makes me more relaxed, and I hope that thing in the future will join the website.

I have some problem with my health sometimes , and unfortunatelythose times I can't leave my bed without pain...

But now, I want to write a post, because Bristol and I lost a lovely and nice attraction (Thx, COVID :/ ), and this attraction was one of my favourite attraction in Bristol:

On 04.09.2022. The Bristol Zoo Gardens closed in the Clifton site and moves to a new site in South Gloucestershire.

I moved from Hungary to Bristol in 2015, and I started to discover this wonderful city at that time.

If I remember well, I visited the Bristol Zoo Gardens for the first time in the autumn of 2015 and I was a little bit scared to visit it.

Why?

When I was a child (A long time ago, in a country far, far away... ), I really liked to read about the wildlife and the wild animals.

I had books from the famous author, David Attenborough, and I collected the documentary comics of Charlie Bood, these comics based on facts and true stories, wildlife and sports events.

The 'Animals are Beautiful People (1974)' was one of my favorite movies in my childhood, but in Hungary the only places where you can see these animals are the ZOOs (except the traveling circuses - brrr...).

If I remember well, in the middle of 80's was the first time, when I visited the nearest Zoo, the Veszprem Zoo with my school class.

We didn't spend too much time there, just a short walk, but that time I was so happy to see some wildlife.

A few years later I visited it with my family again, and then we had time to check everything.

The Zoo Veszprem was small, they didn't have a big collection of animals, so the full trip was just a few hours long, but it was more then enough..

How did I feel after the ZOO?

Maybe, because I was older, then before, and I had time to check everything, I wasn't happy: animals in cages without everything, that remembers them to their natural habitat, they walked around in despair and dirt, and that smell. ..

(It was in the middle 80's in Hungary in the ages of communism - in 2021 I was in Hungary and I visited the Zoo Veszprém with my sister and her family, and it was now similar to the Bristol Zoo just bigger and a little bit less interactive .)

After those feelings I didn't want to visit any ZOOs, and because of these negative feelins I scared to visit a ZOO - I didn't want to see animals in cages..

...but I was very curious, England was new for me, a lot of things are such different then in my country, and it happen long time ago..

So, I gave it a chance, and I visited the Bristol ZOO Gardens in a beautiful autumn afternoon.

When I first time visited it, the staff gave me a map, and I needed to realize the Bristol ZOO was small, but it was beautiful, nice and lovely, full with a lot of opportunities, activities and an afternoon wasn't enough for me to discover everything.

I really enjoyed the visit, but I knew, I will need to come back again for a full day.

So next year, when the weather was nice, spring or summer morning I was there, when it opened.

I already had a map, so I knew when the animal feedings would be, the staff gave me information about that day's animal shows, and I thought, I will have time to read, check and watch everything.

The interesting animal facts around the Zoo reminded me of Charlie Brood Comic books, the feedigs were lovely, I really enjoyed being just a few steps to the animals, and when the staff talked and showed these animals it was incredible and very interesting.

When the Animal Shows started, a lot of people sat on the grass and watched the show, which was always amazing and funny.

Bristol Zoo Gardens was a fantastic place for me, it dispelled my last bad Zoo experience, I visited it two more times, and each time, I had incredible experiences.

I loved the way it presented the characteristics of the animals in a funny way, bringing them almost up close, I was able to get to know the species of the animal itself, and the history of the animal living in the zoo.

In addition, it perfectly combined relaxation with conscious animal, plant and environmental protection, I really liked the way it showed how we can help and make the planet more livable for animals and ourselves.

It was a fantastic place, but now let the gallery of the pictures , that I shoot speak (the photos were taken in 2015/16/17).

I will miss the Bristol ZOO Gardens, I look forward to the opening of the new Bristol Zoo in 2024, I will probably be among the first visitors, and I hope, I will have similar experiences in the new place...
