Richie's opinion :

" I have visited this place several times, on the one hand because it is close to my home, and on the other hand because it offers a stunning view of the former port that used by the Romans, where the river Trym meets with the river Avon."

Sea Mills was the site of a Roman settlement, known as Portus Abonae.

The name and location suggest that this was a river or sea port.

Portus Abonae was the name of the Roman port at Sea Mills, up river from the modern business, where the Romans established a military town and port in the 1st Century AD.  Archaeologists have identified that the Roman period of occupation ended during the 4th Century AD.  Visitors can still see Roman remains today at Sea Mills and Kings Weston Roman Villa.

The Roman settlement seems to have been abandoned by the 4th century, and there is no evidence of Saxon  settlement.

Portus Abonae was an ancient Roman Settlement at Sea Mills, where the Roman army would await embarkation for Caerleon, Wales.

This major Romano-British settlement probably served the nearby spa town of Aquae Sulis (Bath) as its river-port.

Five fragments of a limestone tombstone  was found in 1873 at a site overlooking the railway station at Little Sneyd.

The stone now resides in Bristol City Museum.
