Richie's opinion :

"Unfortunately I haven't had fortune to visit an event of the Redgrave theatre yet, and I heard some bad critic about its seats and its small bar is not cheap, but if you doesen't interest these , it is a must to visit place, because its shows are EXCELLENT."

About the Redgrave Theatre

Built in 1966 the Redgrave Theatre was originally known simply as the ‘Clifton College Theatre’.

The design was based on the Mermaid Theatre in London and was the first purpose built school theatre in the country.

The theatre was officially opened by the actor Sir Michael Redgrave - an ex-student of the college.

After Sir Michael's death in 1985 the building was renamed ‘The Redgrave Theatre’ in his honour.

Since then the popularity of The Redgrave has continued to grow.

All age groups across the College use the theatre for a range of events throughout the year, including school plays and concerts, the annual College musical, visiting speakers, workshops and the Inter-House Play Festival.

Many Old Cliftonians have fond memories of treading the boards either in a House play or a school production and many have gone on to enjoy highly distinguished careers in the performing arts after their theatrical debut at Clifton including John Cleese, Simon Russell Beale CBE, Trevor Howard, Simon Shepherd, Neil Foster, and Clive and David Swift.

Today, as well as continuing to host some of the same groups that first visited the theatre back in the 70's, the theatre plays host to a variety of shows from professional touring companies including comedians, children's shows, book signings/talks, dance and film.

Parking

Car Parking

The only parking available is on street - please plan your journeys to ensure you will have enough time to find a suitable parking spot.

Parking is free after 5pm Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Disabled Badge Holders may park their vehicles on the double yellow lines in front of the theatre.

Coach Parking

Coaches may pull up on the double yellow lines in front of the theatre to allow passengers to disembark. Once clear of passengers they must relocate to Parry's Lane on the Downs where there is parking for up to 15 coaches.

Access

The main access to the auditorium is via two staircases, however ground level access to the front of the auditorium is available via the side door to the left of the building.

Access to Rows A & B are the only rows that don't require any steps.

Access to the Theatre foyer also requires traversing a single step - a portable ramp is available.

Wheelchair users are accommodated in two designated spaces per performance, one on each side of the front row, adjacent to ramped emergency exits.

Additional seating is provided next to these spaces for a companion.

Unfortunately the Theatre does not have a disabled toilet or an Induction Loop at this time but we are working hard to improve these facilities.

The use of motorised mobility scooters in the Theatre are welcome but may pose a hazard.

Disabled customers who are unable to access the Theatre by other means must inform the Box Office at the time of booking.

Their staff will then be able to provide those customers with information regarding the safe use of their scooter in the Theatre.

Customers who require particular seating arrangements in order to accommodate difficulties they may have in attending performances should contact the Box Office in advance.

Warning notices advising of the use of strobe lighting, pyrotechnic explosives and any other special effects are displayed in the entrance foyer on the day of the performances concerned and can also be discussed in advance by calling the Box Office.

The Redgrave Foyer Bar is open 1 hour before the start of each performance.

The Bar stocks a range of house and premium spirits and wines as well as beers, ciders, soft drinks, Marshfield Farm ice-creams and other snacks.
