Richie's opinion :

" When I was there, they were renovating the church, which is close to the entrance to the Northern Slopes."

History

This church stands in what Bristolians refer to as Knowle West, an area which has not appeared on maps, although it has on bus destination boards!

The District of West Knowle was formed from St.Martin's, St.John's Bedminster and Bishopsworth parishes.

It was known as St.Patrick's, 1933-1934, but eventually dedicated to St.Barnabas in 1934; Order in Council 1935, consecrated 1938.
The architect was C.F.W.Denning and his building was huge.
The exterior is of red brick, the interior of concrete.
The style was a simplified classical style  although others have called in Romanesque.
The nave had low passage aisles and there is a bellcote on the gable of the south transept.
The church proved too large for the needs of the parish and the nave was demolished in the 1980s and replaced by housing.
The crossing and transepts are now used as a church hall and the chancel is now the whole church, screened off  in the early 1990s by a heavy curtain.
